Julius Caesar,
Hero or Tyrant?
Julius Caesar has been considered a hero and a tyrant. Caesar lived in ancient Rome, and was one of Rome’s best leaders. Thousands of years later, historians and people have been arguing if he was a tyrant or a hero. A hero is person respected by the people and makes good decisions for his civilization. A tyrant is a person who does whatever he wants to get power and gets whatever he wants. I think Caesar was a hero. A Quote from Caesar History from the Roman Empire, “Although Caesar had taken control of the Roman Empire by force, he had changed the nature of the roman empire, he had swept away the old, corrupt system of the late Roman republic and had set an example to future Roman emperors as well as other future European leaders to like up to.”
Although Caesar had made Rome a better place, he still took control of it by force and used Pompey and Crassus to give himself power. A Quote from Why Caesar was Assassinated, “Caesar did want to take control of the government, one of the laws original Twelve Tables was that no general could enter the city with his army. Julius Caesar ignored this law. In $9 BCE, he entered Tome with the Roman Legion, and too over the government. Caesar had taken control by force. In this case he is considered a tyrant. Even though he took control by force he had, changed Rome for the better. Pompey and Crassus helped Caesar gain power, they turned on him because the disagreed with his ideas, which helped Rome later on. This makes Caesar a hero.
Although Caesar had become a Dictator of Rome, he had changed the whole system of Rome for the better. A Quote from Caesar, Dictator of Rome, “Caesar was not merely a conqueror and destroyer, Caesar was a builder, a visionary statesman, the likes of which the world rarely gets to see.” Caesar was a hero to the people, someone they could look up to. The only people that thought that Cease was a tyrant were the senators. Even the senators that Caesar had taken away their power he hadn't taken away their wealth. But the senate still hated him.
Although Caesar had taken power away power from a senator who arrested two civilians for saying that Caesar was a king, he didn't accept the title king. A quote from King Caesar, “Some among the population even referred to him as ‘Rex’ for king, but this Caesar refused to accept, at least publicly.” Does this make Caesar a tyrant? I say that he was a hero to the people. They treated him like a king because of the good decisions he made for Rome. He was considered a tyrant by the senate because one of the laws stated that there should not be any king ruler of Rome. Because of the people treating Caesar like a king the Senate was afraid of Caesar making himself king. I say that Caesar wasn't a tyrant for being considered a king. He was a hero because he didn't say that he was a king.
Although Caesar wanted to take money and power from the other members of the Senate, he would have used the money to help the people of Rome. A Quote from Why Caesar Was Really Killed, “The senate aristocrats killed Caesar because the perceived him to be a popular leader who threatened their privileged interests. By this view, the deed was more an act of treason than tyrannic one incident in a line of political murders dating back across the better part of a century, a dramatic manifestation of a long standing struggle between opulent conservatives and popularly supported reformers. After reading that paragraph, it made me realize that Caesar was a hero who was murdered by other members of the senate because they were afraid of losing power. The senate is the tyrant for killing someone for being afraid of losing power. This makes Caesar a hero for doing what was right for the people.
Julius Caesar has been considered a hero and a tyrant. I say that he was a hero overall. He had taken the old corrupt system of Rome and had made it a better place. He was a great leader and should be considered one for the things that he did.
