Energy and Place
Essential Questions-
1. How does energy production impact* place?
2. How does your sense of place**, environmental ethic and understanding of our energy needs influence your perception and decisions regarding energy production.

The motion that I debated was “Natural gas found in shale formations and coal bed methane formations is cheap and abundant source of energy that should be a cornerstone of our energy portfolio for the next several decades.” I was arguing against the motion. My initial position was for the motion. I really like the idea of natural gas. After the debate my position for the motion is still the same. I-think that the idea of natural gas is really good. But it won’t be fracked correctly so it will still be releasing greenhouse gasses.
During the debate, it was hard to find evidence that was against the idea of natural gas besides fracking. My partner and I really focused on the ethos for the emotion appeal for the debate. We talked mostly about how fracking effects the water, environment, the towns, and the people. It was a very fun debate. It was a little hard because I do agree with the motion, but when I thought about it realistically, I had an easier time arguing against the motion. If I was to do this again, I would have prepared more for the debate. I would have practiced using better evidence to support my claims.
In the debate, I was told that new technology used in fracking has improved the process of fracking, but when I did a fact check on if this statement was accurate, it was not. According to an article from Harvard magazine, "But even though natural gas is relatively “clean”—particularly relative to coal burned to generate electricity—the “fracking” process used to produce the new supplies poses significant environmental risks. " This claim shows that the process is inaccurate. Another statement that was made in the debate was the impacts that fracking has on the prospering towns was accuate through my fact check to see if the impact was affecting the towns in a negative way and according to "Bakken Business" the towns were being affected in a negative way based on how the mining boom brought drug trafficking and prostitution rings because of the culture of a mining town. It was interesting because it changed my perspective on how it actually works. I thought that this project was really cool because I learned a lot about different forms of energy and which direction we needed to be heading for the future of our planet. It really put a new perspective in my mind about the ways we can make our energy demands work. I really enjoyed this project.

The Chemistry of Materials
The chemistry of materials has shaped our past, our present, and will undoubtedly change our future by the advancements of the materials themselves. A good way to describe this is by looking at how technology has advanced over the years. The advancements in materials is how we move forward. For example, the project that I had done is a perfect example of materials moving forward. I had found that most of the materials used in the past to prevent erosion haven’t been working and after reflecting off of that, a new material was made that will do a better job than previous materials. This is how materials will change the future for the greater good.
The structure of matter on the atomic, molecular, microscopic, and macroscopic levels determine a materials properties by having different crystal structures making different materials have different properties. The can be different types of molecules in different shapes also affecting the properties of materials. Overall, the different forms of the atoms in a material will change the properties of the material.
